Aldi's Australia stores are offering a Folding Bicycle (described as a "
Foldable Bike") in its weekly specials from 18 September 2008. At $199 this is about half the price of the cheapest folding bicycle previously available in Australia. It is described as having Shimano 6 speed gears, alloy rims and a high-tensile steel frame. The wheel size is not specified, but it appears to be 20 inch. There are mudguards and a carrier shown in the photo. This makes it comparable to my Dahon Boardwalk folding bicycle which cost $500. It is also less than I paid to have
my folding bicycle serviced.

I bought one of these.
They're made by Dahon.
The frame seems to be identical to all there other steel framed folding bikes.
Some of the components are pretty down market, but I've already started upgrading mine from my parts bin... should be a fun project... and cheap.

But it has the optional luggage rack, and bell, and carry bag.
I need a bit more height so I've ordered an aluminium telescoping seatpost and since I always ride it with the handlebars at the bottom, I'm going to fit a standard 1" aluminium stem. Both of these should knock of some weight too.
...and of course it will have a Brooks saddle.
Out of my parts bin, I'm upgrading the derraileur and putting on a wider freewheel.
Btw, it fits in a bog standard samsonite suitcase... I just tried.... and the case and bike still come in under the airline limit. Now I'm going to look at what I need to do to turn the case in to a trailer.
They are terrible bikes. Montague are much better - no silly micro wheels. They finally sell in Australia - yay! www.montaguebikes.com.au
