Having had some difficulties with using Lyx to create documents, I thought I would try alternatives. Ubuntu offered me: TeXworks and Kile. These are not WYSIWYG editors, but environments with syntax directed editors. That is you see the LaTex source code on screen, but the editor checks what you type in. As a former computer programmer, I am comfortable with spruce code (if you can cope with Wikitext used for the Wikipedia, then you can cope with LaTex markup).
