Queenstown, Tasmania is a mining town. The tour guides are almost apologetic about its rough character. But for a tourist it has interest with the hills still bare from the effects of timber cutting to fuel smelters and the fumes from the smelters. The rivers run yellow from the tailings contamination. There is still beauty here with the light on the mountains surrounding the town. But don't drink the water from the lake, as that lake may well be a tailings pond.
