Chat with Anthony Feint

Entry29 hosted a "fireside chat" today at the Canberra Innovation Network (CBRIN) with Anthony Feint, founder of Pen.io

Anthony described how he dropped out of university because he wanted to "build things" and went on to start several tech companies. He suggests that universities need to allow students to build and produce a portfolio of work.

ps: One advantage Australian university students have is that they can work in the USA for a year.

Documentary on Young Women in STEM

Greetings from the Canberra Innovation Network (CBRIN) offices, where I am attending the screening of the documentary "Big Dream Movement" about seven young women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). The first was about Cassidy Williams, but I had difficulty understanding her Iowa accent and it was all a bit too "TED Talk". I found I could understand Martha Chumo from Kenya better. One of the later segments had a very disturbing scene where all the students of what appeared o be a school stood to first recite a pledge of allegiance and then some sort of religious prayer, coming out of a public address system (it all looked something from a totalitarian state). The segments about Asya Mohamed Al Jabri & Marwa Saud Al Habsi were a little less frantic and provided a nice change of pace. The documentary is informative, fun and would provide role models for young women to see it is okay to do technology (as much as an old male like me can tell). The documentary is glossy and predominantly US in outlook, but not annoyingly so. Some of the spontaneous scenes appear rehearsed, like a fictional documentary. One problem is that it is orientated to the "start-up" culture and it would be worth pointing out that there are still good STEM careers in traditional corporations and government.

How Smart are Smart Watches?

Greetings from Entry 29 in Canberra, where Ruth Ellison is leading a discussion of Smart Watches at Wearables Canberra. A smart watch can provide notifications and reminders, but these units are currently much larger than ordinary watches. I suggest there is potential for a smart watch combined with a fitness bracelet. This could have a simple one line text display and be very slim. This would prompt you to look at your smart phone or other device. It is interesting to look around the room and see how many people have smart watches, Fitness Bands and Google Glass.

There have been proposals for modular phones, such as  Google's Project Ara. Perhaps there is scope for modules to build wearable devices. The same components could be used for smart watches, Star Trek communicator pins, head mounted displays and also very small smart phones.

One issue was the power consumption of smart watches. One person mentioned that there were mechanical self-winding watches. I suggest it would be possible to run the vibration alert device in wearable devices in reverse to generate electricity.

There was discussion about how reliably the smart watch communicates with a smart phone and headsets. This puts me in mind of Future Soldier projects. Perhaps we will see something similar with wearable civilian gadgets. ;-)

One issue which applies especially in Canberra are secure premises where electronic devices are not permitted, thus the wearable device user has to leave their smart phone, watch, fitness band and head mounted display behind. This could be very expensive for someone who forgets and takes the devices into a secure environment. Apart from any penalty for not complying with security rules, the devices will be confiscated and destroyed.

A second demonstration was of Necomimi Brainwave Cat Ears (more models offered by Amazon Japan). These claim to be able to measure the wearer's emotions and then adjust the ears to reflect this (down for sad, up for happy). Perhaps this could be useful during meetings to gauge the support for proposlas. ;-)

Founding an Analytics Consulting Service Business

Greetings from the Entry 29 co-working space in Canberra, where Gerrie Aldag,– Co-Founder of Innogence is talking about the origins of the business (subsequently sold to NTT Data Business Solutions). Gerrie started as a company accountant. He grew tired of manual calculations and started creating spreadsheets to summarize data. This lead to a new business extracting data from SAP and producing useful analysis.
Another fortnight, another Founders Series fireside chat.
This week's speaker is Gerrie Aldag.
Gerrie Aldag was one of four founders of Innogence. Formed in 2005, Innogence was a certified premier partner in both SAP Services and Business Objects, offering specialised consulting services in both SAP business analytics and HANA. NTT Data Business Solutions APAC acquired the company in December 2012.
At time of acquisition the company employed more than 100 staff across branches in Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and Brisbane.
Gerrie will share his journey from concept to sale ...

Opening of the Entry 29 Co-working Space at ANU in Canberra

Greetings from the opening of the Entry 29 Co-working Space at the Australian National University in Canberra. One of our local MPs is joking about how when you see an innovation meeting with half of the people in suit and the other not, the ones with the suits are the lawyer and the ones without are the innovators. The co-working space is in an old demountable site office (such start-up spaces are traditionally in converted warehouses). The idea is to provide low cost office space for people starting a company and to put them close together with others they can collaborate with. An issue for me is how this can be integrated with the formal programs of the university. ANU runs "Innovation ACT" to encourage students to take their ideas further, but this is not part of their formal students (not for credit).

Entrepreneurs at the Australian National University

Greeting from the Australian National University in Canberra where Peter Davison, founder of the Fishburners Start-up Space, is speaking to the ANU Entrepreneurs Society. Peter described Fishburners as "tech but not too tech". He argues there are two types of Entrepreneurs: naive tech silicon valley types who mostly fail and the Jedi knights with skills, knowledge of their field and a network of trusted colleagues. He argues that Silicon Valley is unique and attempts to emulate it elsewhere are unlikely to succeed. For Australia he suggests an alternative strategy of encouraging entrepreneurs to look at a problem in depth, build a network of stakeholders and be prepared to change their idea. He recommended the work of Saras D. Sarasvathy. Peter ended with some suggestions to get started, many of which revolved around leveraging the university for business. Peter was surprisingly ambivalent about not-for-profit ventures, given that the funded the non-profit Fishburners.

ps: It happens I was at Fishburners in Sydney last week and the ANU is opening its own co-working space "Entry 29 Co-working Space" in a few weeks time. This will offer office space for as low as $200 a month. The new venture is named after Griffin's entry in the competition to design Canberra, which was "Entry 29" (Canberra was founded 100 years ago this week). The Entry 29 building is at 17 Childers Street Acton ACT (behind the Conservation Council), ideally located between the ANU campus and the Canberra CBD.
