The
Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Information Technology hosted a national seminar on "
Green ICT - Empowering Rural India", 20 to 21 August 2010. I have offered them a free copy of my
Green ICT book and course.
Seminar will give the participants a comprehensive overview of the current status of Green-ICT in India and how it can empower our society to improve the quality of our lives and of our future generations. After participating in the deliberations of the Seminar, it is envisaged that the participants will be in a position to- Initiate Green-ICT initiatives in their locations;
- Participate in activities coordinated by Government of India, IIIT-A and their institutions; and
- Advocate for Green-ICT schemes to the government.
Seminar will be making specific recommendations to the Government in promoting Green-ICT solutions. ...

... Former vice-chancellor of Rambhadharachrya Vishwavidyala, Chitrokoot, GN Pandey laid stress on decreasing carbon emission from 2 per cent to 0.2 per cent. He classified green technologies into two categories. He defined the first to deal with global warming by either reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the second as technologies associated with establishing economic "sustainable growth" which includes recycling, resource reduction and many aspects of the biosciences.
Senior deputy director general, department of telecommunications, New Delhi, PK Panigrahi spoke on green solutions to rural telephony. He said that the department is providing subsidy in setting up BTS infrastructure for extending fixed wireless or the mobile coverage in the rural and remote areas. As many as 8,000 villages, having population of 2000 or more, have got mobile coverage. As many as 11,000 more villages or group of villages in remote areas having population of 500 or more are being provided both mobile and broadband services @ 512 Kbps and above, he added. ...
