New Zealand Department of Corrections is building
prison cells from modified shipping containers. A photograph of the
first unit made from a 40 foot standard container has been released. The artist's impression shows a complex made up of several containers with a covered walkway added in front of the containers.
Ironically, in 2007
Amnesty International Australia constructed a
transportable replica of a Guantánamo Bay cell, as part of a
campaign to have the detention center shut down. This was about the size of a ten foot shipping container module.
