China Update 2014

Greetings from the Australian National University in Canberra, where Mr Xue Bing, Chargé d’affaires of the Chinese Embassy is launching the book "Deepening Reform for China’s Long-term Growth and Development" (Edited by Ligang Song, Ross Garnaut and Cai Fang). This is the latest book in the ANU Press "China Update series". The Chargé described the developments on the Chinese economy and the close links with Australia.

The next speaker was Andrew Harding, Chief executive, Iron Ore at Rio Tinto (who sponsor the China Update at ANU). Mr Harding emphasised the need for reform of China's economy and combating vested interests. While he did not say it directly, Mr. Harding was clearly arguing for the rule of law in China.

The last speaker was Professor Yang Yao, Dean, National School of Development, Peking University. I was surprised to hear Professor Yao argue in favour of shadow banking, which in recent times has come in for criticism. He mentioned internet banking as one innovation introduced recently for small shops to use.He also mentioned that Alibaba has a fully automated application for making small loans.

What was not mentioned by any speaker (and not mentioned in new book) was the growing tension between China and its neighbours over territorial disputes in the East China Sea and South China Sea.

This is the latest book in the ANU Press "China Update series":
